2004 Highlight Reel

My Highlight Reel from 2004:

FIRST, our family's trip to Corpus Christi in April. It was the first time any of our kids had been to the beach. We frolicked on the surf and in the sun for two days. No worries. No work. No phone calls. We emailed photos to friends and family from our hotel room. It was one of those rare moments in life where, for a brief time, everything seemed perfect and peaceful. I'll always remember those two days.

SECOND, discovering Jason Morant. The year was filled with great releases from my favorite worship artists and performers: Jeff Deyo, United Live, Mercy Me, Worship Circus, Tim Hughes, Matt Redman. But - after going back to listening to his album since Christmas - I have decided that Jason Morant's album "Abandon" was the most pleasant surprise of the year. I love the rich, textured style of his music and the depth of his lyrical content, which is largely about submitting to God so that he can transform us into his image.

THIRD, finally digging into Dallas Willard full throttle. I'd heard about him before last year, of course. I knew he was something of a guru when it came to spiritual formation. But reading The Divine Conspiracy and Renovation of the Heart has revolutionized my outlook on discipleship and kingdom. Dan Kimball's The Emerging Church was also an eye-opener for me.

FOURTH, celebrating forty years of life. On my birthday, after going to work, rushing home to work out, attending Wednesday night worship, and trying to make my way to an (aborted) meeting, I learned that life pretty much just keeps going after you turn forty. However, I'm still trying to get used to the gray that is beginning to appear in my hair.

Well, at least you can blame being 40 for your gray hairs....I'm not quite yet 29 and already counting them. Oh well, maybe it will be a mane of luxurious silver hair when it is all done.

Regarding the 4th higlight, it is much better to have it turn gray than it is to have it turn loose.
