A Fond Farewell

Tonight, just after midnight, I will be bidding a fond farewell to several old friends. Those friends, Obi Wan, Yoda, Anakin, 3PO, and R2, will all soon disappear from the big screen (at least insofar as all-new Star Wars movies go), though they will always have a space on my DVD shelf.

Star Wars has assumed such a signfiicant place in my life, it is sometimes hard for me to appreciate its impact. I still remember eagerly tearing the plastic off of my copy of the two-record vinyl score of Episode V. I remember being blown away by the opening shot in Episode IV, as a star destroyer chased down a fleeing Rebel ship. I remember standing in line to see Episode VI just after graduating from High School. I remember my then-very-young daughter sitting in my lap during the Episode I pod-race shouting "Go-Annie-Go!"

I've played hours upon hours of Star Wars video games with my oldest son and had shared in long conversations about Yoda's sage-like wisdom with my wife.

When I was young, I spent hours daydreaming about what it would be like to be a Jedi.

But, alas, all good things must come to an end. And tonight, one of the good things in my life - the experience of a new Star Wars film - probably will.

At around 2:00 a.m., I will watch Obi Wan consign his best friend to hell and listen as he and Yoda begin to whisper their secret plans for the return of the Jedi. Then, I'll walk out of the Century Theaters, and out of a wonderful phase in my life, to a thundering John Williams score.

And I'm pretty sure that, even though I will be a little groggy, I will also be smiling.

Update: Christianity today is running a cool series on spirituality in Star Wars. If you're a big fan of the series like me, it is worth checking out.

Hey Daddy,
As I type this you are at the movies with Levi and Corey. When you were talking about the pod race in Episode One, I thought it said: "my then-very-young daughter sitting in my lap during the Episode I IPOD race shouting 'Go-Annie-Go!'" Racing iPods, how boring would that be?
