X-Box 360? Pass for now.

The siren call of the Microsoft marketing gurus has failed. In spite of being sorely tempted, I’m probably going to pass on the very cool-looking X-Box 360 when it launches on November 22. The cost to get in on the ground level with this console is steep (about $600 for a set-up with two controllers and two games), and I’m just not ready to pay it at this point, particularly since there isn’t a killer launch title that I’m dying to get my hands on.

There are also about five other reasons I’m not plunking down a pile of cash for the 360. They are…
1. Age of Empires III
2. Civilization IV
3. Star Wars Battlefront II
4. Elder Scrolls Oblivion   and
5. The Movies

All of these are PC titles (save Battlefront II, which is for the “old” X-Box) that will be on store shelves either shortly before or right around the time the 360 launches. There will be enough gaming goodness in any one of these to keep me busy well into 2006, particularly with the dearth of free time that I’m experiencing these days.

Ironically, Age III is a Microsoft Studios game. Their own PC title, it seems, is competing for my X-360 dollar.

Oh well, I guess Bill will get my money one way or the other, won’t he?

I'm with you on the 360, there's nothing really exciting in the launch title list. So I can see more blades of grass in 'Tiger Woods 2007', big deal. Get 'Gears of War' up and running, or 'Halo3' and we might be talking. No killer app, no bucks from me.

I have a PSP and there are some good games for that, but the upfront hardware cost is not in the ballpark with the Xbox360. There still isn't a really, really good can't-put-it-down game for the PSP. I've ported over some Tivo-To-Go content, but at 30fps I max out at 30 minute TV shows on my 512MB memory card, and I don't think it's worth another $80 to make the leap to 1GB for an hour-long show.
