Why I Like Thanksgiving

We are now a little over two weeks from Thaksgiving. Have you noticed anything about that? People aren't stressed about it.

- Nobody is running around, worried about how their "Thanksgiving shopping" isn't finished yet.
- Nobody is wringing their hands over whether thier kids will have a "good Thanksgiving"
- Nobody is making elaborate travel plans so they can "have Thanksgiving" with every conceivable combination of immediate and extended family members, friends, etc.
- The TV shopping channels aren't full of programs about useless, overpriced decorations, clothes, and gifts that you MUST buy if you want your Thanksgiving to be worthwhile
- There isn't a lot of concern about the Thanksgiving holiday suicide rate
- Nobody is trying to cram an unbelievable number of "Thanksgiving parties" onto their schedule, so that they can "celebrate Thanksgiving" with infinite combinations of social relationships, from work relationships to spousal work relationships to clubs to bible classes
- There is no anticipation of inevitable post-holiday evaluation, particularly where children's experiences are involved ("This was a really good Thanksgiving." "We had the best Thanksgiving ever!")
- People aren't freaking out because someone bought them a "Thanksgiving gift" and they haven't bought the other person anything yet

I love Thanksgiving and July the 4th. Those are two examples of what holidays ought to be like.

Unfortunately, the BIG ONE is also coming. The mother of all holidays. The "C" word, which I won't even speak before Thanksgiving is over with, out of fear of ruining a day that feels like a real holiday rather than a commercially-induced rollercoaster of anxiety and stress.

I need to enjoy the next two weeks, because I can already feel The Grench in me beginning to surface.

My favorite too! And I refuse to utter the "C" word until it is over. I get angry when people turn on their lights and start playing the "music" and all that...

Yep, I feel the Grinch coming on as well!
