Wade in the Water

One of the songs that accompanied the dances that were performed by Rachel's ballet company this summer was the old spiritual: Wade in the Water. I got to see/hear it one last time when they performed last Thursday night at Wylie Baptist.

What a powerful song. There are several versions floating around. In fact, at one point, one of its purposes was to make veiled references to the freedom that would come through the underground railroad. However, even today, it continues to call disciples of Jesus to venture into uncomfortable, dangerous places - because we can be certain that it is there, where justice and mercy are most needed, that God will be moving: lovingly, powerfully, and often tumultiously.
